Rosetta Wells, DM, J.P, SC

April 23, 1949 - September 25, 2025

A Time To Be Born

It was a glorious day on Saturday April 23rd,1949 when the world was blessed with a beautiful and precious baby girl who was named Almeda Rosetta Deveaux. She was called Zetta by her close family and friends. She was the second of twelve children born to Mr. John and Mrs. Francis Deveaux. Almeda was indeed a treasured and special gem. She was the eldest girl of the family. From an early age she learned to be a loving, caring, kind, respectful and polite young lady.

Almeda developed many gifts and talents in her childhood and perfected them in her adult years. Her ability to cook scrumptious meals, knead homemade breads, bake tasty potato bread, cassava bread, delicious minced crabs and her signature dish crab and rice, and green bean n rice. These were heavily sought by family, friends and visitors, especially during Regatta time in Cat Island.

Time to love the Lord

Almeda grew up in a humble, Godly and loving family. The Deveaux’s Household was one with respect, honesty, integrity, love for humanity and a deep abiding love for God were instilled in her. Zetta faithfulness kept her grounded in church. She was christened and grew up in St Philip’s Baptist Church with her family. She was involved in many church ministries, such as Sunday school, bible study, church programs and choir. Her love for God shaped all aspects of her life, as she placed God first and in the center of her life and daily living.

A Time to Learn:

Her formal education began at the Knowles’ All Age School on Cat Island. She was a brilliant student and most of her teachers recognized that she had a love for children. In 1966, right out of the classroom, she joined the teaching staff. The students in her class were much bigger than her. However, this did not bother her because she was determined to succeed. She loved her students and in return they loved her too.

This propelled her to remain in the classroom as an untrained teacher for two years. It also sparked in her a love for teaching.

Being an older sibling Zetta was often expected to care for her younger siblings. Although there were ten younger than her she was up for the challenge. There were times when some of the boys stood up to challenge her but she knew just how to handle them. Her siblings loved and respected her dearly. She instilled life principles in them and expected good behaviour from them at all times. She wasn’t shy in discipline when they stepped out of line. This may have been where the desire to shape the lives of younger people, as an educator, was ignited.

In 1968 she moved to New Providence and enrolled as a student at the Nassau Technical College, where she learned the skill of shorthand typing and office practice. Upon graduation she was encouraged to study at The Bahamas Teachers College to become a trained teacher. This she did and in 1975 she graduated as a trained primary School teacher from The Bahamas Teachers College (BTC) later called College of The Bahamas (COB), presently The University of The Bahamas (UB)

Time for Love and Marriage:

Zetta was twenty-two years old when she met the love of her life, Mr. Ortland Kenneth Wells, affectionately called (Lover). Wells was one of the Legendary Cooling Waters greatest fans. Zetta often said, if you didn’t look very closely, you would easily mistake Lover for one of the group members. This was because he was often dressed just like them.

It was at one of the Cooling Waters Concert that Kenneth set his eyes on this beautiful charming lady, Almeda Rosetta Deveaux, who changed his life forever. They were united in holy matrimony on August 21, 1971. This union was blessed with two beautiful children Cindy Monique and Durward Antonis Wells. Zetta attended the Southland Church of God where her uncle, the late Bishop Clifford Moss, was the Pastor.

When Cindy and Durie came along, she brought them to Cat Island where they grew up from infancy with their maternal grandparents. This was the norm back in those days. Zetta was a loving and supportive mother to her children Cindy and Durie. She made sure that her children got a good education. Many family members were welcomed to live at her home in Malcolm Road East. When she moved to Cat Island it was just the same. Many church folks were welcomed to live with her during conventions, and many police officers and administrators ate at her home.

Zetta moved to Cat island in the early 1980s. She became an active member of the Highway Church of God New Bight Cat Island. She served faithfully doing whatever she could for the development of her church.

Almeda was a well-respected, elegant lady who served her God faithfully, as well as her family and country at large. She genuinely supported her beloved Prime Minister, Member of Parliament for Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador- Hon. Philip Edward Davis. She was a true PLP!! She loved her Prime Minister and the government very much.

She was an educator extraordinaire, serving The Ministry of education for 45 years.

The schools she taught at are:

New Providence:

Ridgeland Primary School

Naomi Blatch Primary

Centiville Primary now (Judith Thompson Primary)

Uriah McPhee Primary

Cat Island:

Knowles All Age

Old Bight Primary

New Bight Primary (Principal)

Devil’s Point Primary (Principal)

Bennet’s Harbour Primary (Principal).

Mrs. Wells was extremely proud of her students, who went on to become outstanding Bahamians such as Lawyers, Doctors, Police Officers, Defence Force Officers, and many others too numerous to mention.

Mrs. Well retired from the teaching profession in 2011.

Awards and Accolades:

Salute to Greatness - July 12th, 2003

Woman of Distinction - 3rd November, 2014

The Distinguished Medal Award - 14th October 2025 now to be presented (posthumously).

One of her greatest and most memorable experiences was being chosen to travel to England for the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles. She took this as a great honour to represent her island and country with such great pride. This daughter of Cat Island also served as a Rotarian, a Justice of the peace for Cat Island and an Ordained Minister of the Gospel of Christ.

Time to Rest:

On July 12th 2025, Mrs. Wells travelled to New Providence to attend doctor after experiencing severe abdominal pain. It was recommended that she had to undergo surgery after receiving her diagnosis. The surgery was successful, but she later developed pneumonia. She was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital, Accident and Emergency on September 22nd 2025 where she received treatment, and was subsequently admitted to the ward. During the early hours of Thursday September 25th, 2025, Zetta was called to her heavenly home. Absent from the body, present with the Lord.

Mrs. Wells was predeceased by her parents Mr. John Deveaux and his wife, Mrs. Francis Deveaux (nee Bannister), brother Jeffrey Deveaux, sister Princess Margaret Stubbs (nee Deveaux), husband Ortland Kenneth Wells (Lover), son in law Alfred “Junior” Moss and her nephew Ronald Mackey.

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN | “Because He Lives”

1 God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus; He came to love, heal and forgive; He lived and died to buy my pardon, An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives

Chorus

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, all fear is gone; Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living, Just because He lives!

2 How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy he brings; But greater still the calm assurance: This child can face uncertain days because He Lives!

3 And then one day, I’ll cross the river, I’ll fight life’s final war with pain; And then, as death gives way to victory, I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives!

SCRIPTURE READING | KJV | Ecclesiastes 3:1- 3 ( Crystal Simmons -Niece)

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

SCRIPTURE READING | KJV| 1 Corinthians 15:50-54 (Ethera Russell-Student)

50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed

52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.

PRAYER FOR THE FAMILY

RECESSIONAL HYMN | “I’ll Fly Away”

Some glad morning when this life is o’er, I’ll fly away;

To a home on God’s celestial shore, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away).

Chorus

I’ll fly away, Oh Glory I’ll fly away; (in the morning) When I die, Hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away).

When the shadows of this life have gone, I’ll fly away;

Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away)

Just a few more weary days and then, I’ll fly away;

To a land where joy shall never end,

GRAVESIDE Ceremony

HYMN | It Is Well With My Soul

When peace like a river, attendeth my way

When sorrows like sea billows roll

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well, with my soul

Chorus

It is well ,It is well

With my soul, It is well

It is well , it is well with my soul

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come

Let this blest assurance control

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate

And hath shed His own blood for my soul

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!

My sin, not in part but the whole Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul!

HYMN | When The Roll Is Call Up Yonder

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more

And the morning breaks eternal bright and fair

When the saved diverse shall gather over on the other shore

And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

Chorus

When the roll is called up yonder

When the roll is called up yonder

When the roll is called up yonder

When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise, And the glory of his resurrection share; When his chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies, And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun, Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care;

Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done, And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

HYMN | ”Just Over In the Glory Land”

I’ve a home prepared where the saints abide, Just over in the gloryland;

And I long to be by my Savior’s side, Just over in the gloryland.

Chorus

Just over in the gloryland, I’ll join the happy angel band, Just over in the gloryland; Just over in the gloryland,

There with the mighty host I’ll stand, Just over in the gloryland.

I am on my way to those mansions fair, Just over in the gloryland;

There to sing God’s praise, and His glory share, Just over in the gloryland.

What a joyful thought that my Lord I’ll see, Just over in the gloryland;

And with kindred saved, there forever be, Just over in the gloryland.

With the blood washed throng I will shout and sing, Just over in the gloryland;

Glad hosannas to Christ, the Lord and King, Just over in the gloryland

Tribute To Mommy: Cindy Moss

My mother was one of the firm foundations of everything I am today. She taught me the true meaning of hard work, perseverance, and faith, lessons that shaped my life and guided me. Her strength and determination showed me that success is not only measured by what we gain, but by what we give to others along the way.

I watched her help people without expecting anything in return, and years later that I have seen how those blessings came back to her a true reflection of the pure and selfless heart she carried.

Her love for her grandchildren was endless. She found such joy in watching them grow, laugh, and learn. Her presence brought warmth and comfort to every family moment, and her gentle spirit lives on in each of them.

My mother also had a deep love for the land and for farming. She found peace and purpose in nurturing life whether it was through her crops, her family, or her community. That same nurturing spirit continues to inspire me every day.

Though she is no longer here with me, her lessons, her love, and her light remain forever in my heart. I will continue to honor her by living with the same strength, kindness, and faith that she instilled in me.

Cindy

Tribute To My Mother: Durward Wells

Mummy now that you are gone, I can only reflect on all my childhood memories of how you raised me, Cindy and Linda.

You did your best to make sure that we grew up with Godley principles, you made sure we had what we needed until we were able to become a man and a woman to go on our own.

You never spoiled me, and you taught me the importance of hard work. You devoted over fourty years as an educator, teaching and molding the minds of young people throughout the Bahamas. Truly I can say you gave it all you had.

You loved church, politics and most importantly you were the most loving mother to me. I will forever miss you, but as the bible teaches, it is appointment unto man once to die and after death comes judgement.

May your soul rest in peace. Durie

Tribute from the Siblings to Our Beloved Sister, Zetta

Our sister Zetta, the eldest of eleven, was truly the heart of our family. From the very beginning, she embraced her role with strength, discipline, and deep love. She cared for us as children—cooking, telling bedtime stories, keeping us safe while our parents worked on the farm, and even correcting us when necessary, sometimes with the tamarind switch. Her guidance shaped who we are today, and her presence was a constant source of com-fort and stability.

Zetta was more than a sister—she was a protector, a teacher, a confidant, and a friend. She welcomed us into her home, helped us through school and into adulthood, and even gave some of us the privilege of beginning married life under her roof. Her kindness was not loud or boastful, but expressed through countless acts of generosity. She had a gift for making each of us feel special—whether through a carefully labeled bag of farm produce, a shared meal, or her willingness to simply sit with us, laugh with us, and pray with us.

We will never forget her cooking—green lima beans and rice with fried fish, her famous crab mince, and the shad and banana pancakes she introduced after a trip to Abaco. We remember the joy of Sunday potluck din-ners, the times she picked us up from the airport, and evenings spent cutting okra, shelling peas, and thanking God for His blessings on her porch. She was our storyteller and comedian, making us laugh until tears rolled down our faces, often laughing right along with us.

Zetta lived life fully, on her own terms. She worked hard, gave freely, traveled where she wished, ate and cooked what she loved, and enjoyed her life her way—all the way. She taught us strength, courage, and resili-ence not through words alone, but through the way she lived.

In her final days, she faced her transition with peace and dignity. When she said, “I’m 76 now. I’ve lived what God promised me, and I’m ready to go home,” we knew she wasn’t speaking of Cat Island but of her heavenly home. Even as we prayed for more time, she reassured us with her faith and readiness. We cherish those last moments of singing hymns together, especially her favorite, City of Gold, when her eyes sparkled with hope.

Though Zetta has left us, her spirit lives on in our laughter, in the traditions she created, and in the love she poured into each of our lives. She has left a void that no one can fill, but also a legacy of faith, joy, and strength that we will carry forward.

Sleep peacefully, dear Zetta. We love you deeply, but Jesus loves you best. Until we meet again.

—Your Loving Siblings

My Beloved Aunt Zetta,

There are no simple words to express the sorrow I felt the day God called your name, and you left to gain your wings. My heart broke in two, and I felt the ache of your absence ever since. The short time you spent at my home was a gift, a treasure I never truly understood until now. Each moment, each conversation, and each laugh is more precious in your absence. I wish dearly that you could have stayed longer with me, but I know heaven needed you more. Even though I wish every day that I could see you one more time, I know I cannot bring you back.

Your memory will always be cherished, especially through your special recipes. They were more than just food they were a part of you, a legacy that lives on. Your famous crab mince and your beloved crab n’ rice will truly be missed, not just for their flavors but for the love and tradition you poured into every dish. Sharing your food meant sharing a piece of yourself, and I carry those flavors with me in my soul.

I find myself dreading the return to Cat Island, knowing that I won’t see your smiling face at the airport or hear your familiar stories about the family and tales of Cat Island. Your presence was a comfort, connection to our past and our heritage, and the thought of walking those roads without you is difficult to bear.

God knew you were in pain and that you would never be well on this earth again, so He closed your weary eyelids and gently whispered, “Peace be thine.” It broke my heart to lose you, Auntie, but you did not go alone. A part of me went with you when God called you home.

Rest peacefully, Auntie. I will love you always!

Your niece Lin

Tribute to Aunt Zetta

Aunt Zetta was not only my aunt—she also had a hand in raising me. She was my grade one and two teacher at New Bight Primary School, where I had to call her Mrs. Wells during the school day. But once the school bell rang, she was back to being Aunt Zetta. She was a strict teacher, but I learned so much from her, and I know she was proud when I left that one-room schoolhouse and later went on to study law. She always told me, “It’s not how you start, but how you finish.” Those words became a guiding light in my life.

I will miss all of our conversations and her 5:30 a.m. good morning text messages. She was always an early bird, always a hard worker, and always encouraging me to be the same. She was also one of the best cooks I’ve known—no one could make crab and rice or crab soup like she could.

I am thankful to say that Aunt Zetta truly lived her life. She traveled widely, experienced much, and shared her wisdom with everyone she met.

When I was about eight years old, she had me recite a poem at Reverend Saunders’ church:

“The Bahamas is a Christian Nation, Cat Island is my station, Earth is my dwelling place, but Heaven is my destination.”

Now, Aunt Zetta, you have reached your destination. We will miss you and we love you, but Jesus loves you best. Take your rest until we meet again.

Tribute to Our Grammy

Grammy was more than a guiding light in our lives she was our constant source of love, strength, and comfort through every stage of our journeys. From our earliest accomplishments in childhood to the proud moments of adulthood, she was always there cheering us on, praying for us, and reminding us of the power of perseverance and faith.

There was never a day that passed without her love being felt. Her voice was our reassurance, her words our encouragement, and her love our foundation. We will forever cherish the memories of coming home to sur-prise her seeing the joy in her eyes, the warmth of her embrace, and those long evening talks that so often end-ed with us falling asleep on her couch. Those were moments of pure peace, wrapped in her love.

Our grandmother gave so much to everyone, always offering wisdom, kindness, and care. But the greatest gift she ever gave us was her unconditional love, a love that will live in our hearts forever.

Her absence leaves an unfillable space in our lives, yet her spirit continues to guide us each and every day. We will carry her memory with us always and strive to make her proud in all that we do. Our grandmother was truly one of a kind — the very best there ever was — and missing her will forever be an understatement.

In Loving Memory of Mrs. Rosetta “Goddy” Wells

I grew up surrounded by women who believed in me, who generously poured themselves into my life—and among them, few stood more quietly, powerfully, and steadfastly than my godmother, Mrs. Rosetta Wells, my dear Goddy Wells.

From my earliest days, Goddy Wells believed in my potential, and she fought—softly yet firmly—for my chance to grow and blossom and for every opportunity she thought I deserved. She challenged me to always reach higher even when I didn’t yet know just how far I could go. She was never loud, but always resolute. Her strength was gentle, and her love was action.

Even in my adulthood, Goddy Wells never lost room in her heart for me. Her kindness never faded and her care for me remained: “Oh Dellie my beloved godchild, take care. Don’t work too hard. Goddy will fix you up. Your crab in the freezer already fried down. You just have to start your pot. Goddy loves you.”

Her loving words and her remembering me no matter how far apart we were, are part of the foundation upon which I stand. A reminder that I carry with me someone’s faith, someone’s blessing. To her I say: ‘My beloved Goddy Wells. Take care now. You no longer have to work hard. God has fixed you up. Your place was wait-ing for you, you just have to take your rest. I love you.”

Tribute from Betty

Rosetta “Zetta” Wells was someone I knew my entire adult life but in recent years someone I have grown to understand, admire and love.

Zetta believed in maintaining standards, was held in high regards by many, former students and myself included. She commanded respect and insisted on decorum unapologetically. Zetta loved her family and in particular her children and grandchildren. They were important to her and she was extremely proud of all of them.

Zetta was dedicated to her family, party leader, party members and valued friends alike. She would tell you the unvarnished truth if necessary but would coerce and embrace interdependence where and when needed. Zetta was a proud, feisty Cat lslander. We will miss her scrumptious meals. Her soups, minced crab, fried fish with crab and rice to mention a few. Her identifying plants to me in the early stages of growth with patience while walking in the fields. Evening conversations while sipping on fresh fruit smoothies from the local trees. Long walks while covering the latest happenings/gossip. That shoulder to lean on if you needed advice or compassion.

Zetta will be missed by many for varied reasons and by me for the love, support, guidance and friend-ship she so willingly shared. My prayer would be for her to be welcomed wherever she maybe with open arms and an abundance of love, with love Betty.

Message of Gratitude

On the behalf of the bereaved, we want to express our sincerest gratitude for your prayers, calls, kindness, love and support during our time. We highly appreciate you taking time out traveling from near and far to be with us. It is our prayer that God continue to bless you and keep you.

We sincerely Thank Everyone on you
