Welcome to York for the Finale Meeting of our 2025 season. A raceday with seven fascinating races with a total prize fund of £275,000 with each race worth at least £25,000 In addition, we have a Countryside market open to all stands side racegoers located on the ground floor of the Ebor Stand with lots of ideas for Christmas (see page 7). I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.

It has been a tremendous year on the track so far, with a remarkable sixteen Group One winners from 2025 already seen racing at York this season (gold star if you can name them!*). Whether it was from the second day of the season back in May when American Affair began a journey to Royal Ascot glory for trainer Jim Goldie Or perhaps Asfoora landing an early blow in the sporting rivalry between England and Australia when winning the Coolmore Nunthorpe for her Victoria based connections. The likes of Trawlerman, Ombudsman and Never So Brave carry strong Knavesmire runs into QIPCO British Champions Day next weekend. We will then hope to see York form taken to the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar - where the fascinating prospect of Sky Bet Ebor winner, Ethical Diamond, representing Willie Mullins has been tabled. I hope you have enjoyed an action-packed season to date and thank you for your support.

Our second race at 2.05pm is a contest only in its fourth season, offering connections of two-year-olds a chance for a £100,000 prize as the British European Breeders’ Fund have backed this valuable series for juvenile colts and geldings. A suitably strong field includes Ghost Mode as one of several runners today for trainer Andrew Balding, as Team Kingsclere look to build on their lead in the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship

The feature £50,000 handicap is backed by William Hill who have been rewarded with a suitably wide-open betting contest, including a brace of Course and Distance winners in La Trinidad and Silver Sword.

The fifth race today celebrates Copper Knight, the winningmost horse on the Knavesmire in the modern era. Since the Denham family first raced their favourite here, he has won on seven occasions from 34 previous starts. Trained by Tim Easterby, that first win was on his Knavesmire debut back in May 2017 You can see a plaque in his honour on the pre parade ring side of the Weighing Room, you’ll notice we have just said “winningmost”, as he may well not be done, as he runs in his own race today.

The next two days will also see the conclusion of the season long contests to be top jockey and trainer at York. In the Living North-sponsored jockeys’ race, after a memorable Sky Bet Ebor Festival, Oisin Murphy and William Buick currently lead the way, tied on 9 winners. As noted above, the leaderboard of the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer at York is headed by defending champion, Andrew Balding, bidding for back-to-back titles having posted a remarkable ten victories to date, two clear of William Haggas whilst Karl Burke leads the local contenders. (See p26 & 27)

We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors; William Hill, Parsonage Country House Hotel, the connections of Copper Knight, European Breeders’ Fund and PJ Staffing (the team who keep the racecourse so tidy).

A particular welcome to the members of the Racing TV Club who join us for some live action today; if you want to follow the channel uninterrupted then the big screen above the Roberto Guinness Bar is your destination.

Thank you again for your support today and throughout this year, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed all you have seen. If you are not with us tomorrow, winter well and I hope you can return for our new season on Wednesday 13th May 2026, take advantage of a price freeze when the tickets go on sale online, tomorrow afternoon.

Clifford Lee meanwhile sits just two behind the leaders on seven wins. Over the next two days Daniel Tudhope could be the one to watch, with the leaders on duty in Newmarket. WHAT WAS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS

Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get an autumn shower. For these October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table

BUSTARDTHORPE END

SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT

In August 2024 we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop

MR MOWITALL

Joining the grounds team over winter were seven robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself

THE TEAM NEVER REST

Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 7,000 pints of paint have been used by the team and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).

A LIVING FLOWER WALL

OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND

Earlier in the year the flowers were petunia and petchoa but as we head into autumn it is cyclamen, all were grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.

THE BARS HAVE IT

Over last Winter a number of bars were given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Kylie Minogue Wines Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie

NEW ON THE MENU

Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.

If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.

Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m

Race Type: Handicap Rating: 86-105

Prize Money: £50,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Our opener is a handicap, such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

Your vital statistics for this race are 4yo+ horses, over a mile, rated 86-105.Based on previous runs the handicapper considers Ice Max as “the best” so he takes top weight.

Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; see La Trinidad is one to offer both aspects of form.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Having only gave way in the closing stages to finish fourth at Ayr last month, NORTHERN EXPRESS could be poised to land a nice purse A 1lb ease in the ratings can only help the veteran and an eighth career victory may be on the cards. About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 7f

Race Type: Conditions

Prize Money: £100,000

Age: 2c&g

Stalls: Farside

A recent addition to the calendar, this valuable race is limited just to 2yo colts and geldings who are European Breeders’ Fund eligible This nascent series seeks to reward those younger horses of real potential who missed out on the usual programme of Pattern races, perhaps due to a niggling injury All the runners have finished in the top six of an extensive programme of Maiden and Novice races backed by the EBF The baseline is a 9st weight though only Advance Twentyfive actually goes to post with that burden. The weights of the rest of the rest the field reflect that previous success adds weight at varying amounts depending on the grade of the race won; that for example explains the weight carried by Big Song who has two wins to his name Or, to add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter Any horse in from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher Band benefits from an allowance, which is a long-winded way to explain the reduced burden for Going Commando (from Band B) and by logical extension for Gold Dawn (from Band C).

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Hornsea Bay has posted several creditable efforts in defeat in handicap company this summer and another good showing is forecast. However, the son of New Bay could prove vulnerable to something unexposed, with MUKHTALIF fitting the bill. William Haggas’ charge supplemented a decent second behind a subsequent 88-rated rival at Haydock with a breakthrough triumph at Newcastle last month and an official rating of 81 could prove to be lenient. Dante’s Lad is also worth a second look.

The William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed

EBF Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Novice

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Centre

A novice race so limited to 2yos, run over six furlongs. At this stage in their career there is a natural difference between the colts and fillies with the former expected to start from a higher weight to deliver a fair contest, notice how La Belle Forest and Thaluna both benefit. After that it is level weights, except as both fillies have won already that generates a weight “penalty” which reduces the gap on the boys

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

All a bit much? Then go for the alternative “P” for “pin” rather than “pedigree”.

Leading course trainer (20-25): W Haggas (36 wins from 215 runners, 17%) runs THALUNA Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (10 wins from 51 runners, 20%) runs LA BELLE FOREST Longest Traveller: HALLO SPACEBOY trained by E Walker, Upper Lambourn, 202 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 8th October

KNAVESMIRE TIP

La Belle Forest changed hands for 165,000gns as a yearling and is a half-sister to a juvenile winner, so she warrants a market check on her introduction. However, THALUNA made a promising debut when filling the runner-up spot over 5f at Ascot last month and is likely to relish this extra furlong. William Haggas’ youngster could have any amount of improvement to come and looks the one to beat. Any market confidence behind newcomer Hallo Spaceboy would be interesting.

COPPER KNIGHT: WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE

EYES ON OUR SIXTH RACE WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER EIGHT.

The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his seven races. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success.

A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet!

In July of 2023, July Copper Knight made history by registering another win on the Knavesmire. He remains a stalwart of Tim Easterby’s operation, with a record breaking seven wins.

Speaking ahead of today’s run, Tom Denham said, “He’s just been an unbelievable horse to be involved with. He still loves getting up in the morning and going for a canter. I’m lucky enough to work at Tim’s and get to see him most mornings. It’s just an absolute joy to be involved with him. We don’t take anything for granted. I’m hoping to be in racing for a very long time and I’m not sure I’ll ever have one as good as him.”

Four generations of his owners are planning to cheer him on; grandfather Keith and his son, Tony, then both Tom and his brother James with baby Rupert making the fourth age! Will Copper Knight continue to make history with an eighth win today on his 35th run at York?

Still a handicap, this time for 3yo+ horses though still over five furlongs.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 95 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar

Need some help? If you want to talk York form, then Copper Knight has it in spades being the winning most horse here, will today mark a new record of eight victories.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Dropping back to 5f has been the making of KINSWOMAN and an 8lb rise for her comfortable victory at Chester could prove lenient as she goes up in grade. Azure Angel bounced back to form with a success at Southwell and is capable of being in the shake-up, along with the in-form Roach Power, who scored at Ascot only last Saturday. Copper Knight has had a few attempts at landing the race named after him but arrives in top form after scoring at Redcar last week, while Portland winner Eternal Sunshine is another to note.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 7f Race

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Farside

A farewell handicap open to horses 3 years plus, over seven furlongs.

What makes it a bit different is the jockeys. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by balancing the past success of their chosen jockey against a weight reduction for using a pilot who is still developing. Thus, the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name. See how Candonomore benefits from 7lb claim by Jake Dickson, whereas Maxi Boy is partnered by Conor Orr who has a bigger body of successful work behind him.

If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until we do it all for one last time, starting at 1.30pm tomorrow afternoon.
