Married to ADVENTURE
A complete guide to eloping in the Granite
State
Long gone are the days when eloping meant spur-of-the-moment courthouse affairs and secret runaway weddings. Now, the beauty of an elopement is the value, intention and creative freedom behind it—the blend of both nontraditional and traditional wedding elements that make the day exactly how you envision it to be. Not only do the mountains or the coast of New Hampshire make for the perfect elopement backdrop, but they inspire a story of intimate wonder that photographers like Kelsey Converse live to tell through adventure.
Written and compiled by: Emily Heidt and Kelsey Converse
Photography: Kelsey Converse Photography
We completely understand: A big wedding isn’t for everyone. Whether you are looking for more spontaneity or financial flexibility on your special day, elopements provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate your relationship in a small, intimate way that is unique to you. “There is no right or wrong way to elope, no matter if you opt for a ‘just you’ wedding or a private ceremony with a party with family and friends after, and you don’t even have to hike to have an unforgettable experience,” says Converse. “You can create your own day that is as expansive as it is exciting, allowing you to start your life together by making memories chasing the things that make your heart beat faster.”
From where to elope, why, when and how, we sat down and talked with Converse about all of her tips and tricks to planning a New Hampshire elopement.
Why Elope?
Let’s start here: What even is an elopement? Elopement has a different meaning than it used to — it’s no longer whisking away to the city hall and getting married without anyone knowing. Elopement now is a way to create a unique and customized day that is centered around who you are as a couple. It has become a way for couples to rewrite the traditions and perhaps start from scratch, so that you are just focusing on what is most important to the two of you.
Many couples are now choosing elopement because they want their day to be intimate and centered around just the two of them. Paring the day down to the bare minimums can allow for a couple to work with a small budget or get married at a favorite remote location that would be difficult for guests to get reach. Others wish to share their day with a small group of their closest people. This way they get to spend quality time with each person present, and most importantly, each other. Here are some things to consider as you decide if elopement is right for you.
Benefits of Eloping
1. You can be more spontaneous.
2. No pressure to perform.
3. You’ll have more freedom (especially financially).
4. You don’t need to choose just one experience.
5. You can create a wedding from scratch with complete flexibility.
Disadvantages of Eloping
1. Eloping can add tension to already tense relationships.
2. Hiring great vendors is even more important.
3. You won’t receive as many gifts off of your registry.
4. Limited number of guests.
5. There are no rules, which can be overwhelming.

When to Elope in New Hampshire
SUMMER
The summer is the busiest time of year due to tourists. It can also be extremely hot, so if you’re planning on a summer elopement, then I would highly recommend planning for June or end of August. (I highly recommend doing a weekday for seclusion purposes.)
SPRING
Spring can be tricky weather-wise, but it is the least busy time of the year. The best time to elope is from the end of April until early June when the waterfalls are flowing, most of the ice has melted and the trees are starting to bloom (depending on location).
FALL
Fall is my absolute favorite season because of the crisp temperatures, beautiful colors, and the variety of activities that you can do like apple picking, camping and stargazing. The best time to elope is the end of September until mid-October if you want to get the vibrant colors. It is definitely a popular time of year, so keep that in mind as you choose your location, and start planning sooner rather than later!
WINTER
If you’re hoping for a winter wonderland scene for your special day, the best time to elope is from late January until early March. It may be chilly, so plan accordingly with weather-specific activities and attire. For activity ideas, think of incorporating skiing, skating, snowshoeing, sleigh ride or even sledding.
Where to Elope in New Hampshire
New Hampshire provides some of the most beautiful landscapes in New England for eloping, so no matter what you are hoping to be surrounded by, we likely have it (besides the desert, of course).
Popular New Hampshire Locations:
THE WHITE MOUNTAINS
If you are someone who loves the outdoors and exploring new places, then the White Mountains in the North Country may be the perfect place for you. You can hike up a mountain in your hiking gear to get changed at the top, do a first look, have your intimate ceremony, set up a picnic for dinner and watch the sun go down. It’s magical. I highly recommend checking out Artist’s Bluff and Echo Lake (Franconia Notch), Cathedral Ledge (North Conway), Mount Willard and Mount Jackson (Crawford Notch) and Glen Ellis Falls (Pinkham Notch), to name a few.
THE LAKES REGION
While the lakes region is known for its lakes, it also has its own abundance of hikes, stunning lakefront rentals and more. Mount Major is one of my favorite hikes and has some of the best views in the region.
SEACOAST
We may not have a massive oceanfront, but we do have a few beautiful beach locations near our neighboring states that are idyllic for intimate weddings. Get married on Rye Beach at sunset and then celebrate with a picnic, or roam around Portsmouth for quintessential New England vibes. Perfection!
How to Plan the Perfect Elopement
What’s special about eloping is that it can be as simple or extravagant as you want it. Throw out the rule book and start from scratch by figuring out what’s most important to you.
Here are some key items that you’ll want to focus on:
1. Dream up your day. Start by thinking about a perfect day in both of your minds. What are you doing? What are you eating? Who’s there with you? Your elopement day should be a mixture of all your favorite things (making a list of 5–10 passions, activities and interests you have together and separately is helpful, too) — that’s the formula to a perfect day!
2. Choose a location and season. Where do you feel like your best selves? Do you love the mountains or the beach? Having an idea of the place you both feel most at home or at peace is always a great way to narrow down the location you want to have your elopement. This could be a place that you often go to, or even the idea of somewhere completely new.
3. Create your budget. On average, traditional weddings in the U.S. cost around $34k. With elopements, they can be as extravagant or inexpensive as you want them. My biggest piece of advice is find out what’s most important to you and focus your budget on those items/ vendors. As a simplified answer, the cost of an elopement can be anywhere between $5k–$30k. These numbers truly depend on what is important to you, the type of experience you’re hoping for and the most critical vendors in your mind. In general, most of my couples spend between $10–20k total for their entire elopement experience.
4. Choose your vendors. I always recommend starting with a photographer or planner. They can help you with decision-making, giving you resources and guidance
and make your planning a lot easier. They can also help give you recommendations for other vendors you are considering. The most common vendors are photographer, videographer, florist, hair and makeup, officiant and caterer. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, this can be exactly what YOU want—you don’t need to worry about what other people have done. You can have all the vendors or none at all. With elopements, you want to find people who you can connect with and trust. Don’t just make them a check on your checklist.
5. Book any travel, accommodations and flights if needed. Think about a space that you would
want to get ready in, have your loved ones celebrate at, or that you’ll want photos in. Accommodations really do have a fun impact on your memories.
6. Gather the details. You can be as simple or as extravagant as you’d like. Details can be vow books, dinner setup, picnic items, shoes, accessories and more. Focus on the things that really matter to you. (Don’t forget to also think about wedding traditions that you may want to keep or create your own!)
7. Make it legal. Get your marriage license, find an ordained officiant or justice of the peace and get married.
8. Have the best day.
Q&A
with photographer Kelsey Converse
Q: Can I have guests?
How many do you recommend?
A: Yes, you sure can! Elopements can be just the two of you, or you can typically have 1–15 guests. Family and friends are important to a lot of couples, and you can build your stay to have time with just the two of you, as well as quality time with each of your guests.
Q: Are vendors necessary?
Who would you recommend?
A: The best part of eloping is that you can focus on what ultimately matters most to you. Do you want a big beautiful bouquet? Do you need photos and a video to document all the memories? Do you want your hair and makeup done to feel pampered? Do you want a planner to take care of all the details and setup of your day, or a caterer to cook a delicious meal for you and your loved ones? You can choose whatever means most to you because you don’t have the stressors and expectations that a larger wedding brings on.
Q: Do we need an officiant? If so, what is the best way to go about that?
A: You will need an ordained officiant to be legally married. There are a few ways to do this:
1. You can hire a professional officiant to put on a beautiful ceremony for you.
2. You can have someone who is ordained sign off on your marriage license for you (many photographers are ordained).
3. Have a loved one become ordained to officiate your day.
Q:
A:
I can’t decide between a wedding and an elopement. What do I do?
Do both! That’s the beauty of where we are today. You don’t need to decide between one or the other. I have tons of couples that have a day for just the two of them, and then they have a wedding/reception/party afterwards to celebrate with everyone they love. Be creative and don’t feel like you need to fit in a box.
Q:
Do I need to hike?
Do I hike in my wedding dress?
A: No, you don’t need to hike! With elopements, you should only do activities that make sense to you both as a couple. However, if hiking is something you want to include because it’s something you enjoy doing together, then it is an amazing way to find seclusion. Most couples hike up in their hiking attire, then change at the top, but this depends on the hike, your attire and your preferences.
Q:
What about the weather? What do we do if it rains or snows?
A: Just like with any wedding, weather is always unpredictable. It will be important to either have flexibility in your timeline or a backup location. Check with your vendors on their flexibility in case there is unforeseen weather. Be prepared to either switch to plan B or embrace whatever weather comes! I would suggest bringing clear umbrellas and waterproof gear if possible, and don’t forget proper footwear.

What tips do you have for future elopement couples?
My biggest tip is to find a photographer who knows what they are talking about. Find someone who will help you, guide you, be there for you, who supports you, and pushes you to do what you want to do and not what you think you should do.
Also, don’t feel pressured by the societal norms of a wedding. Do what you and your partner want. I still wore a traditional wedding dress, my husband wore a tux and everyone dressed up. Just because it’s a small, intimate day doesn’t mean you can’t still include some traditions.
The packing part of our elopement was probably the toughest part. Since we were traveling and rented an Airbnb, we had to come with all of the things we needed.
Some things we bought/rented:
1. Décor
2. An arch
3. Flowers
4. Chairs
5. Tables
6. Hiking packs (we did a ceremony and then went for a hike after, just my husband and I)
7. Hiking boots
8. Hair/makeup items for touching up
9. A tent
What could future couples expect when eloping?
Prepare for lots of opinions. My best advice is to not let people’s opinions get in the way of doing what you want to do. No matter what you do, someone will have something to say and someone will be unhappy, so you might as well do what makes you happy.
What tips do you have for future elopement couples?
Emily & Dylan Compton
Like any process of wedding planning, things can definitely be overwhelming at times. What was helpful for me and my husband was sitting down and making a list of the “must haves” for our day. For example, my husband has always made his famous sandwiches for hiking trips, and that was a must-have for our wedding picnic. Additionally, we knew we wanted to have a first look and our first dance on top of the mountain.
What was your favorite part of eloping?
One of our favorite parts of our elopement was having the top of the mountain to ourselves on a warm fall afternoon close to sunset, and walking towards my husband for our first look. We had been together all morning getting ready, organizing our packs and then hiking for a few hours, but in that moment, it just felt so unbelievable seeing him staring out into the mountains waiting and just knowing we were finally getting married in the way we had always dreamt about. I loved that it was just us in that moment; it felt so special.
Amanda Trothier & Nicholas Frugale
Why did you choose to elope?
My husband and I had a much lower than average budget for our wedding because we knew we wanted to buy a house within the first year of being married. We are also adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts, so it felt very natural.
After meeting and talking with Kelsey, we decided we wanted a day, just the two of us, to unofficially get married, but we also wanted to go through all the motions like a first look and reading letters from loved ones who could not attend the reception we planned.
We held a micro-ceremony with 25 of our closest family and friends after at Jericho Mountain State Park. From there, we went to a beautiful mountain mansion tucked away in Newry, Maine, where 70 of our family and friends gathered for a burning ceremony, food, dancing and what we like to refer to as a “house party.”
What tips do you have for future elopement couples?
We packed layers of clothing beyond our wedding attire and hiking outfits, fun props we wanted to include in some of our photos (bouquet, picnic setup, hats!) and food. We also packed our letters from family and friends and a mini bottle of champagne to celebrate. Some other essential items included a flannel, jean jacket, winter hat, headlamps, coffee (we made it once we got to the top), food, champagne, blanket, “just married” signs and hats!
Toni & Dave Bagarella

We first pictured our wedding day being just the two of us on top of a mountain saying our vows together, but after going through my dad’s passing and David finding himself after divorce, David and I built such a strong and understanding love. It made us think of our plans at a deeper level. Although we didn’t officially “elope” like we thought we always would, we had the best of both worlds by having a very small, intimate backyard wedding (40 people). Kelsey met up with us at 3 a.m. two days later to hike in the mountains with us and our dog. We got to the top to a perfect sunrise and used that time to reminisce on our wedding day. It helped me so much because I also felt like I was visiting my dad in the clouds.
What was your favorite part of eloping?
I loved walking up to the peak of the summit and seeing the bright pink sunrise. I actually started crying because I couldn’t believe how beautiful the sky was. I took it as a sign from my dad that he was there. My dad wasn’t here to walk me down the aisle during our backyard wedding, so to see that sky on our hike felt like that was him guiding me and handing me to David from the sky. We also loved being able to be ourselves. We had packed our PB&Js and truly just enjoyed each other’s company. We felt no stress or had any real timeline for anything. A traditional wedding can feel very structured and stressful, and we felt the complete opposite!
Winter Whimsy
A fresh twist on a nontraditional season
As autumn slowly gives way to winter, a new transitional season begins. Amid the chilled air, dried branches and browning leaves, Kate Dawson of Kate Dawson Events and her creative team show us how to embrace the magic of winter with their elegant wedding design. The Greenery at McKenzie’s Farm provided an inspiring blank canvas, as the team created an unexpected winter-themed wedding with a dash of whimsy.
Written by: Kayla Hollatz Mitchell
Creative direction and design: Kate Dawson Events Photography: Rodeo & Co.
To bring in the magic of winter, Brown created a visually stunning floral and lighting installation using only beech branches and baby’s breath. Familiar to New Englanders, the crinkled beech leaves add texture and warmth while the baby’s breath has a frosty effect on the design. Intricately woven together, the foraged branches and florals create a bold visual impact upon entering the space.
For a touch of whimsical delight, three twinkling Moravian star pennants from Claxy Lighting were strung from the beech branches. “We all crave light in the colder months, and light creates the magic of a season,” says Brown.
The bright and airy indoor space inside The Greenery at McKenzie’s Farm gave Dawson and her ambitious team of wedding vendors the creative freedom they were looking for. “It was a blank slate in the most inspiring way,” Dawson says. “It felt like we could easily implement our own designs.”
Come rain or shine—or even snow—The Greenery features a spacious reception room with whitewashed, barn-style wooden accents and contemporary finishings. Even on the cloudiest of days, the floor-to-ceiling windows let in a natural glow of light.
Playing off of the star pennants, candlelight was considered an essential element of the elegant tablescape. Glowing from within the clear echo hurricanes provided by Simon Pearce Glass, the pillar candles added to the enchantment of the space. “No matter if you’re looking at a candle or a beautiful chandelier, light evokes a wonderful excitement in all of us,” says Brown.
In lieu of a grand centerpiece, florals and greenery were gently sewn together and placed around the candles and draped linen. Anemones, garden roses and lilacs are a few of the many delicate florals used for the tablescape. “We wanted to create a balance between the heavier candle hurricane elements and the lighter floral elements,” Brown says. For greater visual impact, Dawson chose blue floral patterned linens from BBJ La Tavola. Clear chargers with marbled edges paired with blue velvet napkins and gold flatware created a captivating layered effect on the reception table. “Sometimes patterned linens can look summery, but by layering other textured elements, we thought it gave a nice nod to the frostier months,” says Dawson.
Mirroring the glittering effect of freshly fallen snow, this beautifully crafted sequined wedding dress from Needle & Thread adds a dash of sparkle. “The dress was one of the first things we found and fell in love with,” says Dawson. “We based many of our design decisions on this unique bridal dress.”
Thousands of white sequins are woven into the sheer layer to look like snowflakes—an impeccable way to highlight the winter scenery. With sheer long sleeves featuring a laced cuff, the bride can easily transition from indoor to outdoor events throughout the day while keeping her bouncy curls intact with the help of hairstylist Lena of Hair that Moves.
Intentionally designed by the talented Emily Asher of Emily Rose Ink, the custom invitation suite is wonderfully cohesive with the wedding design. From gorgeous hand-drawn floral illustrations to elegant calligraphy to gold wax seals, no detail went overlooked.
Asher also designed personalized menus and table cards featuring delicate beech leaves and white floral illustrations. The rich browns and deep blues preserved the design’s warmth and kept it from feeling too icy.
What says winter wedding more than this stunning 18-karat white gold and diamond Snowfall necklace from Von Bargen’s? The bib-shaped necklace features a flurry of delicate snowflakes made from round, brilliant cut diamonds. In the chance of inclement weather, a pale gray-blue fur coat can be worn without dulling the bride’s shine. Thanks to the beautiful makeup artistry of Amanda McCarthy Beauty, a swipe of icy blue eyeliner provided the perfect pop of color. Paired with an enchanting sapphire ring with diamond side stones from Von Bargen’s, the rich cobalt blue hues were also accented in the delicate ribbon used in the invitation suite.
The astonishing floral artistry from Birds of a Flower created an aura of warmth against the wintery backdrop.
“Transitional seasons are just as interesting, because you get to play with the different textures of those transitions,” says Brown.
Inspired by the multidimensional texture of snow, the bridal bouquet featured bleached hanging amaranthus, which added fringy playfulness and movement.
The bouquet also incorporated muscari for a pop of color, ranunculus flowers for layered depth, and bleached ferns for a freshly snowcovered look.
The four-tiered white wedding cake exquisitely baked by Jaime Melfi-McConkey from Autumn Nomad featured cascading blush pink and white florals provided by Brown. To make the minimalist cake design stand out, a laceinspired texture was added to one of the cake tiers.
Hundreds of edible sprinkles and sugar crystals were thoughtfully arranged to mimic the sparkle of the bride’s sequined dress. Placed atop stunning floral linens from BBJ La Tavola, the cake table with its chilled champagne bottle and blue cocktails created a beautiful vignette for all to enjoy.
There is beauty in all seasons. “Off-season weddings are just as beautiful,” says wedding photographer Meghan McGovern Hamilton of Rodeo & Co. “Winters are memorable, and I always love the challenge of them.”
More intimate in nature, winter weddings present a joyful opportunity to gather and celebrate with loved ones. After the long-awaited champagne toast is given and the last bites of delicious cake are enjoyed, you’ll settle into your new life surrounded by treasured guests as you dream of this next chapter full of whimsy and magic.
